Session 1:

Math – Does It Matter How You Teach? with Kathleen Cotter-Clayton

Many people dislike math because of the way they were taught. The traditional approach of teaching mathematics does not work for most children. We now have new information on how to foster learning. Children must truly understand in order to remember, especially those with learning challenges. We know that a deep understanding of concepts removes anxiety, lessens the burden of memorizing, and makes math more enjoyable. In this workshop, you will explore some teaching strategies and techniques to help children learn, reduce math anxiety, and show them the beauty and joy in math.

About Kathleen:

Kathleen Cotter Clayton is the daughter of Dr. Joan A. Cotter, author and creator of the RightStart™ Mathematics program. She was one of the first children to grow up under the Activities for Learning principles. Kathleen has a degree in Home Economics from the University of Minnesota and has two Masters Degrees from the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. Kathleen and her husband Steve have six adult children ages 27 to 34.

Session 2:

Launching Your Child Into Life: the Power of Homeschooling High School with Kathy Miiller

Have you ever thought, “There’s no way I can give my teen what professionally trained high school teachers can!” or “If I homeschool high school, they will miss out on important experiences and opportunities.” Many home educators decide to send their teens back to school in the middle and high school years because they feel ill-equipped. The truth is that the high school years are the most powerful, life-changing time to homeschool and YOU can make that happen. In this session, Kathy will show you how to progressively prepare your child for launch from K-12, customizing their trajectory in the way only homeschooling can.

About Kathy:

Kathy Miiller was a licensed high school math teacher and corporate curricula developer before becoming a nine-year homeschool mom of 5. She is an avid proponent of homeschooling through the high school years and hosts a statewide Facebook group called ND High School Home Educators, a place where home educators across the state can ask questions and find opportunities available to our North Dakota

teens.

Session 3:

Language Arts that Matter with Kristy Rose

Teaching language arts doesn't have to produce tears -- yours or theirs. It also doesn't need a costly, cumbersome curriculum. The goal of Language Arts is to teach effective communication and information processing while building critical thinking. That's what matters in school and in life. Learn tips and tricks to teach in a way that builds these skills without burning out you or your student.

About Kristy:

Kristy grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and studied English and Creative Writing at Mills College and Oxford University. In 2006, she and her husband moved to ND where her family homesteaded in 1903. After trying all forms of traditional school, she began homeschooling her two children 12 years ago. Her eldest graduated in 2021. She is passionate about homeschooling and about encouraging homeschool moms. She is the coordinator of the Tricity Home Educators Association and founder of ND Homeschool Moms.

Session 4:

Meeting Them Where They Are with Ginger Thomas

Any mother of multiple children knows no two kids are the same. This is never more true than when it comes to education. It is easy to get discouraged and feel like our kids are behind or we aren't doing enough when we look at the standards and what other kids the same age are doing or not doing. Ginger will walk you through how to customize your child's education for them, focus on their strengths instead of their weaknesses, and help you lean into their learning style (and your teaching style) so you can both feel like you are succeeding on this homeschool journey.

About Ginger:

Ginger, a native North Dakotan, has degrees in Criminal Justice and Business Administration from BSC and MSU-Northern. She started homeschooling her two children 13 years ago and her eldest will graduate in 2025. Ginger has years experience in children's ministry and business management. She believes each child can do hard things when given the tools and confidence to do so. She is vice-president of the Tricity Home Educators Association and co-founder of ND Homeschool Moms.

Kathleen talks about her session.

Ginger shares a bit from her session.

Kristy tells you a little about her session.
